S C A L E: Supporting Collaboration and Adaptation in a Learning Environment

 

DESCRIPTION

The SCALE environment (http://hermes.di.uoa.gr:8080/scale) aims to support learners in (a) the achievement of learning goals through the elaboration of individualized and collaborative activities and (b) the development of collaborative and communication skills in the context of a learning community.

SCALE supports

(i) individualized learning by enabling learners to work on learning activities and providing personalized feedback/guidance according to their preferences,

(ii) collaborative learning by enabling learners to work on collaborative learning activities, supporting alternative models of collaboration and promoting/facilitating/regulating the synchronous communication between the group members, and

(iii) assessment by enabling the automatic assessment of the activities, the peer- and the collaborative- assessment.

A number of tools have been developed including the adaptive text-based synchronous communication tool (ACT) supporting the communication of learners, the adaptive web-based concept map assessment tool (COMPASS) supporting the elaboration of activities based on concept maps and the web-based environment (PECASSE) supporting self-, peer- and collaborative- assessment.
